The notary certifies that the document is genuine, signatures are authentic, and the content is what it purports to be. This step is non-negotiable. Documents that are not notarised will be rejected at the MFA stage, and therefore also at VFS.
Authentication at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Abuja
After notarisation, your documents must be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. To complete MFA authentication, you will need a Remita payment slip and the official MFA payment receipt — documents missing either of these will not be processed. The MFA applies an official authentication stamp confirming that the notarised signatures and seals are genuine. This stamp is what VFS Global and ultimately the Chinese Embassy require before superlegalisation can proceed.
Submission Through VFS Global (Abuja or Lagos)
Once your documents are notarised and MFA-authenticated, they are submitted to VFS Global — not to the Embassy directly. VFS Global operates on behalf of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China and processes all legalisation submissions at their centres in Abuja and Lagos. No appointment is required, and walk-ins are accepted. Payment is made onsite at the VFS centre via POS. You can submit in person or through an authorised proxy with a signed authorisation letter.
